Newport, RI #2

Here are a few more photos from our trip to Newport. We didn't really investigate the history of any of the mansions, but by mistake we stumbled into the grounds of one called The Breakers. It is was a summer cottage of the Vanderbilt family built at the end of the 1800's. I guess they were really big in the steal and railroad business. It was a huge place and the line going in for the tour was really long. Little did we know you where suppose to buy a ticket to even be allowed on the grounds of the mansion...oops! We circled the place once just to take it all in and kept going down the cliff walk.

This is the front entrance to The Breakers. Sam, being his usual outgoing and charming self, tried to convince one of the workers to allow us in the mansion ahead of the long line. That's when we found out we were not really suppose to be there without buying a ticket...luckily she didn't kick us out.

This was the side of the mansion that faces a pretty garden.

The beautiful tile ceiling over the patio area in the back of the house, facing the ocean. It ended up taking us a while to just walk around the place because Sam was so fascinated by the craftsmanship of all the stone. Surprise, surprise!

Sam stroking the marble pillars...just kidding Sam!

The back view of the Vanderbilt mansion.

Just a couple other mansions along the cliff walk.

The International Tennis Hall of Fame is in Newport as well. We walked into the courtyard, but decided not to do the entire tour of the facility.

We really look like tourists huh! Craig, Sarah, Sam and sleeping Aubrey are standing by a really old catholic church, where President JF Kennedy and Jacquelin were married. I had to take a picture of the sign to remember the interesting details. We also saw the building of the very first Tavern during the time of the 13 colonies. When we drove by it after dark, we noticed they still used candlelight (or maybe it was just electric powered candles) to light the inside.

What a beautiful sunset on the ocean! We let Aubrey run in the park before the drive home. This was the best picture I got of her cause she kept coming towards me so fast.

This huge cruise ship was heading back out to the Atlantic after spending the day at Newport.
